Newport County manager Hayden Mullins believes that even after a slow start, the team grew into the game and deserved the victory.
“I think the first half was a little bit disjointed if I'm being honest. I think the way we started the game wasn't right, and we spoke about that at halftime.
“But I felt we grew into the game, I thought first half we had large periods of the game, I thought they struggled to get to grips with Yahya and Doidge up front and we were going into those areas and really stretching them.
“I think we had the best chances, we had the best overall play in the first half and then second half we got the goal we wanted, and we finished the game off strongly.”
Mullins was especially impressed with how the team continued to stay strong despite going behind early in the game.
“A lot of what I saw today is what we need to take into the season.
“We didn't get too disappointed with the goal, we conceded, we stuck to what we wanted to do, I thought the boys applied it really well.
“It was important that we won the game because we spoke about winning and we want to build momentum now going into the season and getting that feeling, that winning feeling.”
Former interim manager Chris Todd was also on the sidelines, with the new County manager praising the work he has put into the squad.
“Toddy's been brilliant since I've walked in. I didn't really know Chris, but I've heard really good things about him and he's made me feel really welcome.
“He was doing the job so naturally he knows all the players and knows them inside out. He’s been working with some players here for a long time so I've been leaning on him a lot.
“He took the session yesterday, he prepared the boys for today, all of that out there today, what you saw and a lot of it was Chris's work so he's done fantastic work.”
The manager has also spoken to the players since his appointment and has set his expectations out for the season ahead.
“It was a relief to meet the players, sit them down, put my expectations out of what I expect from the lads this season, and it's pretty much what we want to try and do to be successful this season.
“The lads have taken it on board which is good. I'm looking forward to working with the group.
I’m immensely proud to be here and managing Newport mostly; it's been a long time coming for me and it's an opportunity that I'm going to give everything, I've got to.”
Mullins also spoke on the fixture ahead as County face Roma at Rodney Parade on Tuesday night and how important it is to be welcomed by the home fans.
“I think we've got to concentrate on what we want to do really, I think it's how we want to try and set up, what we want to try and do against them.
“We could draw a Premier League team in the cup for example, and it could be a similar set up and a similar side of what we might see on Tuesday, so we will try and get some bits into the boys of how we want to try and go about our game.
“I can't wait to meet them really. I think I met a few of the fans here today which was really good. I can't wait to meet the Amber Army at home and really get to know them.”
