Newport County came from behind to defeat Yeovil Town at Huish Park, with Shaquille Gwengwe playing a key role in the comeback, and he shared his thoughts after the victory.
"I think it was a really good team performance against a really good team. I think we had our structure and our principles down to a tee today and, obviously, getting on the scoresheet is always good."
Gwengwe continued his impressive pre-season form by scoring his fourth goal of the summer, and he believes it has put him in a strong position ahead of the new campaign.
"That's what I'm here for, so I'm happy to bring that confidence into the season.
"That's why I'm setting myself in good stead in pre-season, just trying to get on the scoresheet and build good habits. That's always a good thing, so hopefully I can take this form into the season."
After a slow start, which saw Newport County fall behind early on, the team fought back to claim victory and Gwengwe believes the squad's mentality was key.
"That just goes to show our mentality and how we're willing to dig deep for each other. Obviously, going behind so early is never a good thing, but we didn't panic.
"We knew what we were supposed to do and we dug each other out, really. Ultimately, we got the win, so that's the important thing."
Attention now turns to Tuesday night's Carabao Cup tie against Wimbledon, and Gwengwe believes the squad is ready for the challenge.
"I think we're born ready. We're always ready. I think we've had a good pre-season. Obviously, Tuesday's result is behind us and now we're just focusing on the future and the next game.
"We've got a really good group, so we're ready for that challenge on Tuesday."
Before then, Newport County welcome AS Roma to Rodney Parade, and Gwengwe admits it is another reminder of how far he has come in a short space of time.
"It's amazing. Not too long ago I was playing Step 3 football, and now we're preparing to face AS Roma.
"We're excited. It's all positive. Hopefully, we can give the fans something to shout about going into the season."
