MATCH REPORT | NEWPORT COUNTY 3-0 ROCHDALE AFC

Match Report 3-0

Newport County grabbed their first three points of the season following a dominant 3-0 win against Rochdale AFC.

Two first-half goals from Kyle Cameron and Shaquille Gwengwe set the tone going into the second-half.

A 90th-minute goal from Yahya Bamba sealed all three points as County start the season on a high.

County caused issues at the start of the game, with several dangerous and inviting deliveries into the penalty area, but no one managed to get on the end of them.

Lee Jenkins was the first player to test the Rochdale goal, meeting a ball in from Harrison Biggins, but Nils Ramming in the Rochdale net was equal to it and kept the effort out.

Cameron opened the scoring for the Exiles just before the 20-minute mark as Bamba headed the ball back into the area, where it found the defender, who made no mistake from close range to give County the lead.

The Exiles came close to doubling their advantage through Christian Doidge, who got on the end of another dangerous delivery from Biggins, but the Rochdale goalkeeper was once again on hand to deny him.

Ciaran Brennan then came close with a stunning strike from outside the area, but he couldn't get enough dip on the effort as it sailed just over the crossbar.

But Gwengwe opened his account at Rodney Parade as he doubled County's advantage following another malicious delivery from Biggins. The ball fell to Gwengwe inside the area, and he made no mistake from close range to find the back of the net.

The visitors came out of the interval with a handful of chances, but the likes of Jenkins and Brennan stood firm to block the attempts and keep County's two-goal advantage intact.

Bamba showcased his pace with a threatening solo counter that caused mayhem for the Rochdale defence, but he couldn't wrap his foot around the ball as the effort flew wide.

Rochdale’s Bryant Bilongo then shown a second yellow card in the 66th minute after a hard foul on Cameron Evans and was subsequently sent off.

County continued to dominate as Cameron Norman demonstrated his qualities as he skipped past the Rochdale defender before winning a corner for County.

Alfie Merritt had his first chance of the afternoon as the ball fell to him outside the area, but he got too much power behind his effort, sending the ball well over the crossbar.

Just before the final whistle, Bamba got the third for the Exiles with a close-range finish, finding the back of the net despite Ramming getting a hand to the ball.
