Nelson Jardim | We expect a strong response from our players

Nelson Jardim

Head coach Nelson Jardim has called on his side to deliver a response this weekend as they prepare to host Colchester United on Saturday afternoon (3pm).

The Exiles face a stern challenge against a U’s side that boasts one of the league’s best defences—currently ranked third overall for goals conceded this season.

Despite a recent dip in form, with three defeats in their last four matches, Jardim remains confident his side can bounce back and continue their strong home performances with the backing of the Amber Army.

“Home games are massive for us, and that’s something I’ve reiterated all season,” Jardim said in his pre-match press conference.

“We speak with the players regularly, and many have told me they feel more comfortable playing at home.

“At under-21 level, players aren’t always prepared for the kind of atmosphere they face in away fixtures, so it’s natural they feel more confident here. You can see that belief reflected in our performances—our form at Rodney Parade has been strong.”

“Colchester have been one of the standout teams over the last 10 to 15 games. Defensively, they’ve been exceptional—third in the league for goals conceded, and only four conceded from set-pieces all season. That’s impressive. They’re a tough, well-organised side.

“We know this will be a difficult match, but we expect a strong response from our players. With the support of our fans and the confidence we have playing at home, we’re ready to give everything.

“We’ve shown this season that we’re a strong team at Rodney Parade, and we’re determined to build on that again this weekend.”

Ahead of Saturday’s clash, Jardim also provided an update on the fitness of his squad with just five games remaining in the League Two campaign.

“There’s some good news and some bad news,” he said.

“The bad news is that Cameron Evans felt some discomfort in his hamstring towards the end of the last game.

"He’s had a scan, and unfortunately, it looks like he’ll be out for two to three weeks—possibly the rest of the season. That’s a big blow. He’s been a really important player for us.”

On a more positive note, Jardim confirmed the return of two key forwards.

“The good news is that CBR is back. He’s over the fatigue issues and is in a good place now,” he added.

“Hudlin has also returned. He’s completed three full training sessions with us. He’s not ready for 90 minutes just yet, but he’ll be in the squad and available for selection.”
