Newport County Manager David Hughes says the focus will be on turning positive performances into results as the Exiles prepare for Saturday’s clash away at Cambridge United.
“I’ve been pleased with the way we’ve gone about our games so far. The attitude and application from the players has been exactly what I’ve wanted. But the emphasis has to be on us converting those performances into points. That’s the next step for us, and we know we have to be clinical in key moments.”
Hughes also confirmed that the club are continuing to work on potential signings ahead of the transfer window deadline at 7pm on Monday.
“We’re active and we’re looking to strengthen. But it’s not just about adding bodies – we’re looking for the right players, the right characters who can fit into the culture we’re building.”
On Wednesday, the Exiles took part in a behind-closed-doors PFA friendly at Rodney Parade, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Ged Garner and academy prospect Harri Pugh were both on target for County.
“It was a great opportunity to give players like Jaden Warner and Ciaran Brennan some much-needed minutes. These games are really valuable in helping players build fitness and sharpness outside of competitive fixtures.”
With focus now firmly on Saturday’s test against Cambridge, Hughes is determined his side rise to the challenge.
“We know Cambridge will pose threats, but as I’ve said, the emphasis has to be on us – how we impose ourselves, how we play our game. The performances have been encouraging; now it’s about making sure those performances turn into points.”
