Jordan Wright is looking forward to Newport County’s Sky Bet League Two trip to Swindon Town on Wednesday after a standout performance against his former club on Saturday.
The goalkeeper played a crucial role in securing a goalless draw, making a vital penalty save that helped the Exiles claim a point at Rodney Parade.
“Obviously kept the clean sheet, and it gets us a point, so it’s a great feeling to get it, especially against my old club,” Wright said. “Saving a penalty is like a striker scoring one. It meant a lot, and yes, I was getting some stick from behind the goal, but that’s part of football. You have to embrace it and give it back when you can.”
Wright believes the save had a big impact on the match. “The second half was pretty even, but I think we did well and controlled a lot of it. My job is to keep the ball out of the net, and thankfully I was able to do that.”
Now firmly establishing himself as Newport’s number one, Wright says the added responsibility is something he embraces rather than fears. “No, that’s what everyone wants to do. Everyone wants to play as many games as possible. It’s about keeping learning, getting better, and showing the gaffer and everyone else what I can do.”
Looking ahead to Swindon Town, who boast one of the league’s top scorers (Aaron Drinan), Wright is ready for the challenge. “Everyone in this league can score, and Aaron is having a great season. I’m relishing the challenge and hopefully I can keep it out of the net against him.”
With a busy month of fixtures ahead, Wright says focus and preparation are key. “It’s a big month with lots of games, and it’s a great opportunity for us to show what we can do and move up the table. We want to produce the performances we know we’re capable of.”
