Famous Five | Swindon Town

1938

Newport County head into Wiltshire on Wednesday evening (11 Feb) to face Swindon Town in an EFL League Two match-up.

The two teams have a rich history, with this being the 100th meeting between the clubs since 1921.

Here is a look at Five Famous wins for the County against The Robins...

Newport County 2-1 Swindon Town | 5th September 1929

Newport’s 10th season in the newly established Football League began with a defeat at Southend United, but their first home game pitted them against Swindon.

Jimmy Hindmarsh had been manager of the County for a decade, and was aiming to keep the side in the Third Division South.

Goals from George Richardson and Billy Thomas eventually saw Newport edge their opponents, although they were not celebrating for long: Swindon would beat them 5-0 just four days later.

Four points separated the sides at the end of the season, with Swindon 14tha and The Exiles in 18th. They would fail re-election the following season and end up relegated out of the Football League.

Newport County 6-4 Swindon Town | 27th December 1938

Two of the most bizarre days in the club’s history, as County came into this one having lost 8-0 the previous day to the same opponents.

Despite this, Newport had already won 13 league games, and were looking like challengers for promotion to the Second Division.

Manager Billy McCandless had been poached from Dundee the previous year, and would go on to use just 13 players throughout the season.

Despite this, a bumper crowd of 20,261 saw a hat-trick from Lance Carr, punctuated by goals from Arthur Hickman and Arthur Hydes, and witnessed a remarkable turnaround from the day prior.

Newport would end up as champions of the Third Division, securing promotion for the first time ever. However, they only played three games in the Second Division before the outbreak of war halted the league.

Newport County 1-0 Swindon Town | 18th May 1982

The scene was set for a final day showdown to stay in the Third Division. Neither side was safe, but Swindon sat in the relegation zone.

Victories over Southend and Huddersfield gave Newport a much-needed three point lead over their relegation rivals, whilst Swindon claimed four wins out of six and boosted their own hopes.

A gripping game ensued, with Swindon hitting the woodwork in the second half. However, the goal that sealed it came from the spot: Tommy Tynan scored his 13th and final league goal with ten minutes to spare, ensuring safety for Len Ashurst’s side.

Swindon found themselves relegated out of the division, and had to face fourth-tier football for the first time in their history.

Swindon Town 0-1 Newport County | 25th November 2017

Newport had not won at the County Ground since 1955, and met a Swindon side sitting in the play-off spots.

County had gone over a month without a league win after a promising start, with Michael Flynn’s first full season in charge threatening to tail off.

However, a historic victory in Wiltshire was secured when Ben Tozer headed his first Newport goal in over a year, leaving The Exiles just two points behind their opponents.

The two teams would finish in the top half, with Swindon missing out on the play-offs in 9th and Newport two places below.

Newport County 2-1 Swindon Town | 3rd February 2024

Just over two years ago, and the last time Newport beat Swindon in the league.

Graham Coughlan’s outfit were unbeaten in their previous five League Two meetings, including a notable victory over Wrexham at Rodney Parade.

County had been further bolstered by a battling performance in the FA Cup against Manchester United, holding the Red Devils in a narrow defeat.

Swindon had less to shout about, with a torrid run of four straight defeats ending 2023.

The game was moved to an early 12:45 start, and despite Town taking the lead early in the second half, goals from Will Evans and Seb Palmer-Houlden gave Newport a third consecutive win.
