Nelson Jardim | It was important to get back to winning ways

Head coach Nelson Jardim was pleased to see his side return to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Gillingham on Tuesday night.

A stunning first-half hat-trick from Bobby Kamwa saw the Exiles claim a first win in three matches, despite a consolation strike from Jimmy-Jay Morgan.

“It was important to get back to winning ways, especially in the way that we did,” he said post-match.

“We were very good in the first half with the right attitude and with the players at it and running hard.

“I mentioned at the weekend that we are fighting for our lives and for next season. The only way of doing that is finishing this season strongly and getting as many wins as we can.

“Let’s make sure everyone is still focused and knows that there are a lot of games to play; we need the right mentality moving forward, we need to make sure we bring what we did against Gillingham every game.”

He added: “Bobby had a good performance and but the whole squad and team were the heroes tonight.

“The way that they fought together was brilliant, from the goalkeeper to the striker.

“They were at it and know that they can be anything when they have the right attitude.”

Despite the win at Rodney Parade, Jardim is still urging his side to keep on improving.

“We conceded another goal from a set-piece which we’ve been suffering from," he finished. That was disappointing and we have to keep on improving.

"The goals we’ve conceded the last two games haven’t been good enough. They’ve not been brilliant goals from the opposition it’s been set-plays, second balls or individuals errors.

“That is probably down to the process of this team but we have to find that balance. We have to be a team where the fans can see goals and all-round performances.”
