RISING COUNTY INTEND TO RUBBISH THE ODDS WHEN SATURDAY COMES

Match preview

Leading bookies will give you 5/6 on League Two top dogs Walsall savaging the Exiles in sight of Newport's famous transporter bridge this Saturday.

There are 11 points and 23 places between rock-bottom County and the Sadlers - not to mention a gargantuan gap in goal difference.

Yet, this is only a verse in lyrics which throws up a real possibility of one of the shocks of early season in English football's fourth tier.

Dave Hughes' Amber warriors have four victories in their last five battles and have roared into the Emirates FA Cup second round - booking a first-week December clash with National Conference Boreham Wood at the Meadow Stadium.

The encounter will play out within the shadow of the legendary Elstree Studios which house Eastenders' Albert Square, past bawdy seventies laugh-along On the Buses and where 007 movie The Man with the Golden Gun was screened.

Now County boss Hughes urges his troops to fire a silver bullet to topple a Walsall side which boasts the meanest rear guard in League Two, but who have taken just one point from their last nine.

The sweet taste of three points could propel the Men from Gwent off the trap door up to 19th spot above Harrogate, Cheltenham, Accrington and Crawley, if results are favourable.

The upbeat Hughes reflects , "I believe our midfield section is young and so energetic. We respect Walsall, who are clearly a good team, but we can promise them a tough time. It won.t be easy for them against us.

"If you look at Ben Lloyd, Cameron Antwi, Kai Whitmore and Sammy Braybrook iour midfield is young in age, but full of legs.

"All four put one heck of a shift in against Gillingham in the cup  {last Saturday}. We have managed Lloydy this week because he ran 16km against the Gills. His ability to accelerate and deaccelerate is staggering, what an athlete !

" The way he goes about his work is quite exceptional. He is capable of showing at a high level. He is electric and has a huge ability to cover ground. "

Reflecting on the sparkling recent displays of dreadlocked former Cardiff City schemer Antwi, Hughes insisted, "He has scored two in the last two games, he can be a regular midfield goal-scorer. Cameron is a talent who is capable of playing at a higher level - as is Sammy [Braybrooke]."

County skipper Lee Jenkins is set to maintain his spot in central defence after reluctantly coming off in the Gillingham tie after clashing heads with team-mate Courtney Baker-Richardson, repelling danger.

Said Hughes, "He came off because we didn't want another impact opening up a cut above his eye. He looked like a boxer, but has no black eye. Very strange!"

A few hundred will travel down the M5 from the west Midlands expecting their Sadlers to exert more anguish on Newport - yet Hughes is urging his team to maintain their new-found momentum and upset the odds.

He boomed, "Our focus is ourselves. If we perform to the level we are capable, we will move up the league. It's all about the level of our performance, the result will then take care of itself. We want to continue a positive momentum."
