Over the years, Newport County and Swindon Town have shared more than just competitive encounters, with a number of players pulling on both shirts across their careers.
Ahead of the latest meeting between the sides, we take a look back at some of the past and present faces who have donned both colours, reflecting on their journeys and the impact they made at each club.
Jake Cain
Jake Cain made his Newport County debut in 2021, first featuring in a 2-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Trophy. Arriving on loan from Liverpool, the technically gifted midfielder quickly impressed with his composure on the ball and eye for a forward pass. During his time at Rodney Parade, Cain made 28 appearances in all competitions and registered two assists, gaining valuable senior experience in League Two.
After leaving the Exiles, he joined Swindon Town, where he spent two seasons continuing his development in the Football League. He is currently playing for Morecambe, where he has featured 22 times this season and contributed eight goal involvements, continuing to show his quality in midfield.
Ryan Delaney
Ryan Delaney’s connection to both clubs is particularly strong. The commanding centre-back is currently on loan at Newport County from Swindon Town, having joined the Robins after captaining the Exiles in the 2023-24 season. In his first spell at Rodney Parade, Delaney established himself as a leader at the heart of the defence, wearing the armband with pride.
One of the standout moments of his time at the club came when he captained County in the memorable FA Cup tie against Manchester United. He also made an impact in front of goal, notably scoring in a 4-2 victory over Forest Green Rovers, underlining his importance at both ends of the pitch.
Danny Rose
Danny Rose enjoyed a memorable spell with Newport County after beginning his career in Manchester United’s academy and later featuring for Oxford United. The forward spent three and a half years at Rodney Parade, becoming a key figure in the side. Rose scored 36 goals for the Exiles and played an important role in the club’s Conference South title-winning campaign in 2010, with his goals and work rate making him a firm favourite among supporters.
He later went on to represent Swindon Town for 18 months in the latter stages of his playing career. Since retiring from professional football, Rose has moved into coaching and is now Head of Academy Coaching at Salford City, continuing his involvement in the game off the pitch.
